Exhaust Project Page

This is the crazy exhaust system I built for my Torino.

I had 2 1/2" pipes going into Spin Tech Pro Street Series mufflers with an "H" pipe behind the collector. I wanted to let it breath a little more, but also quiet it down a little. I liked the tone of the mufflers, but they were designed for a car with catalytic converters and were a little louder than I wanted.  I also wanted the center section removable so I could take it out when necessary.

I researched exhaust systems and found a few articles on theory and one in particular by David Vizard published in Popular Hot Rodding, (find it here) that seemed to make sense and was different than what most everyone else is doing.

I came up with this idea and thought, "well it can't be any worse than what I have now!"  I formulated a plan to build 3" header extensions approximately 16"-18" inches long, and empty them to a resonance chamber with high flow capacity. This chamber will also act like a combination X and crossover pipe, then exit to the mufflers. Here's the result:

I started with a pair of Hedman Hedder extensions.

The angles didn't quite work for my layout so I had to make a little change.

And ended up with this.

The Resonance Chamber was designed to work similar to an "X" pipe. (It'll be more clear as you see the final layout)

Top and bottom plates were made...

....And tacked together like this

The extensions were shortened to fit the chamber

Holes were cut for the extensions

then everything was mocked up

The fit looked good, so I continued...

I tacked the flanges to the back of the mufflers…

Then I tacked the 3” pipes that go to the mufflers in place…

Then I bolted everything back up in the car and got it to it’s correct location and tacked it all together.

The mufflers are at an angle because the exhaust pipes that go over the axel are angled. I wasn’t replacing that part of the system, so it just has to be like this……

Everything still looked good, so I started welding it all together!

And ended up with this…

I tied the top and bottom together with some 3/4" tubing inserted through the chamber.

Then I bolted it back in the car.

I don't know if this makes more horsepower than it did before, the butt-O-meter says it didn't lose any.  It's definitely quieter and has a unique tone.

This is a terrible recording, with a little water vapor still in the exhaust, but you can get the idea...
